We celebrated Kurban Bayramı (Eid al-Adha) as Madison Turkish-American community at Eagle Heights Community Center. The Cultural Center served meat, rice and desserts (baklava). The meats were donated by some Turkish-American families.
All people had a chance to enjoy the food. Everybody also had very lovely conversations with the people in their table. They celebrated each others bayram (eid). The tradition in Turkey is that children visit elder people and families visit each other to celebrate their bayram. Kurban Bayramı - Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of prophet Abraham (İbrahim) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram (by God’s command). Eid is also about spending time with family and friends, sacrifice, and thanksgiving for being able to afford food and housing. Kurban Bayrami Celebration program was held at Warner Park Community Recreation Center.
Kemal Karpat, Professor Emeritus at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, gave an introductory speech about Prophet Abraham and Kurban Bayrami (Eid Al-Adha) celebration.
TACC-Madison Weekend School students showed theatre performance from Nasreddin Hodja, Turkish Folk Dance, and song joyful sings. Great jobs! Thanks to their volunteer teachers.
Participants watched a comic video that showed funny things in daily life of Turkey.
