Kurban Bayramı - Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice)  is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of prophet Abraham (İbrahim) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God, but instead was able to sacrifice a ram (by God’s command). Eid is also about spending time with family and friends, sacrifice, and thanksgiving for being able to afford food and housing. We celebrated Eid al-Adha as Madison Turkish-American community  at Eagle Heights Community Center. The Cultural Center served meat, rice and desserts (baklava) in the lunch. The meats were donated by some Turkish-American families.

The program started with the performance of TACC-Madison Weekend School students. The audience received a warm welcome greeting from speakers. And then students demonstrated their performance. They presented short sketches, songs and poems about bayram. They were really fascinating. They entertained all audience with their skills. Thanks to teachers of TACC-Madison Weekend School.

After the students’ performance, the food was served. All people had a chance to enjoy the food. Everybody also had very lovely conversations with the people in their table. They celebrated each others bayram (eid). The tradition in Turkey is that children visit elder people and families visit each other to celebrate their bayram. In this program, Turkish community had the opportunity to cherish this precious Turkish value in Madison. After the dinner, children and parents had some fun games. The winners received some gifts. And the cultural center delivered some gifts to people who were lucky in draw in the closing part of the program.

TACC-Madison is honored to organize such a lovely event which promotes the friendship among Turkish-American Community and foster the values of Turkish tradition in Madison.
